The Most Miserable People in the World

Jeremiah 31:2-4

The Saab that made me sob
“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love”
Beaten Up (2-3a)
Victim who
survived the sword

Stranded in the wilderness

Far away from God

Beloved (3b)

He found grace

The Lord appeared to him

Why? An everlasting love

Blessed (4)
Again I will build you

Reconciliation: O virgin Israel!

Rejoicing: tambourines … the dance … merrymakers

What could be more wonderful than a love that never, ever ends?

Jeremiah 29:4-14

How do we live for Christ in this dark, sinful, godless world?

Be productive: Plant gardens and eat their produce

Be hopeful: Get married and have children

“Bloom where you are planted”

Seek the Welfare of Babylon (7)

Psalm 137?!

SimonStyliteSeek the welfare of the city ...and pray to the LORD on its behalf

For in its welfare you will find your welfare

Seek me with all your heart

Be in the world, but not of the world

Discouraged, disillusioned, and depressed about the government?

The Bad Rulers 1-2
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture

Nobody gets away with anything: I will attend to you for your evil deeds

The Better Rulers 3-4
I will set shepherds over them who will care for them

God controls rulers

God changes rulers

1 Timothy 2:1-4

The Best Ruler 5-6
I will raise up for David a righteous Branch

  • How He will rule
  • What He will do
  • Who He is

Preachers Who Pander

Jeremiah 23:16ff.

Two ways of becoming a celebrity preacher: Beecher & Spurgeon

Henry Ward Beecher

Preachers Who Pander  (16-17)
Do not listen …

  • Because of what it will do to you
  • Because of what you are actually getting
  • Because what you are being told is wrong

God Who Is Present (23-25)
Do I not fill heaven and earth?

Why a theology lesson?

spurgeonProclamation That Is Powerful (28-29)
dreams vs my word; straw vs wheat

Dreams and Spiritism

God’s Word is a fire

  • Negative
  • Positive

God’s Word is a hammer

God’s Proclamation:

  • Based firmly on Word of God
  • Does not make me comfortable with sin
  • Drives me to Christ

It shall be well with you  - only in Christ!

Pastor Richard C. Klueg

Run for Your Life!

Jeremiah 21:1-10

What do you do when a tsunami is coming?

The Audacity (1-2)
Zedekiah vs. Nebuchadnezzar

Zedekiah “gets religion” and “turns to God”

God’s wonderful deeds in the past

God is not mocked

The Anger (3-7)
Quite the opposite of what they asked for

In anger, and fury, and great wrath

Evading the reality of God’s wrath:

1) OT vs NT?

2) Only talk about the “positive”?

3) Simply deny it?

The Answer (8-10)

I set before you the way of life and the way of death

An example from the past

An example from the future

An application for right now

Believers: Remember Lot’s wife! … Come out of her my people!

Unbelievers: Flee from the wrath to come.

Run! Run for your life!
