When God Disappoints Me

Jeremiah 15:15-21

What happens when a preacher gets upset with God?

The Complaint (15-18)
A passive-aggressive prayer:

“I gladly embraced Your Word!”

“I faithfully separated from the world!”

“I deserve better than this.”

The Command (19)
Repent
If you return, I will restore you

Refine
Utter what is precious and not what is worthless

Resist
They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them

The Confirmation (20-21)
Jeremiah’s call (1:18-19) reaffirmed:

God’s protection
I will make you … a fortified wall of bronze

They shall not prevail over you

God’s Presence
For I am with you

When God seems far away, guess who moved!

Snake Oil Preachers

Jeremiah 14:13-18

Clark Stanley’s cure-all

The Grieving Prophet
Ah! Lord God …

People deceived

Jeremiah shaken

The Lord misrepresented

Godless Preachers

They claim divine authority

I will give you …
Prophesying lies in my name

They were not from God

I did not send them
Nor did I command them
Or speak to them

They were deceivers

A lying vision
Worthless divination
the deceit of their own minds

Follow the money: they ply their trade

Gullible People
Guilt:
I will pour out their evil upon them

Sorrow: Let my eyes run down with tears

Beware the snake oil preacher!

How to Argue with God

Jeremiah 12:1-5

“You’ve got some case!”
Having a “good” argument

The Conviction
Rule #1: Plan on losing the argument
Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you …

The Complaint
Rule #2: Be specific and remain rational

Jeremiah’s points:
1. Bad people were prosperous

2. God was the one making them prosperous

3. Their religion is not real

4. Lord knows, I have been good

“That’s not fair!”

Jeremiah’s solution: Smite them. Now.

The Challenge
Rule #3: Put your problem in perspective.

“The mystery of God’s extended patience”

Running with men/Running with horses

In a safe place/In a dangerous place

Perspective: Others have it a lot worse, and maybe you will someday, too.

Losing to the Lord is a blessing!
