Pastor Richard C. Klueg

Testing, Testing, 1-2-3

2 Corinthians 13:5-6

“The unexamined life is not worth living” - Socrates

Why Ask the Question?
“… a way to hell, even from the gates of heaven.”

  • To challenge
  • To confirm

What Am I Questioning?
Whether you are in the faith

Is it presumptuous to claim assurance of salvation?

What Are the Questions?
Examine yourselves … test yourselves

1.Do I believe what God’s Word teaches?

2.Does my life show the evidence of salvation?

3.Am I connected with God’s people?

Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election
2 Peter 1:10

This Ends Now!

2 Corinthians 13:1-4

The mosquito that keeps you awake

Moving Toward a Conclusion
Our default stance: Patience and restraint

But cf. Ecclesiastes 3 - a time to speak … a time for war

3 visits = 3 witnesses

Having a Confrontation
I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now

¨Clearly guilty

¨Serious sins

¨Sufficiently warned

Proceed with Confidence
“What gives you the right to judge me?”

Since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me

Christ’s powerful work through Paul

His strength in my weakness

Patient when we can be, decisive when we must be

Living for Others

2 Corinthians 12:13-14

Natural laws and spiritual laws - Luke 17:33

What Am I Seeking?
for I seek not what is yours, but you

What does mean by saying I seek … you?

  • Their trust
  • Their well-being

                    Especially spiritual: for your souls

What Am I Spending?
I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls

Ways to “spend”

  • Material giving
  • Labors

¨ Time

¨ Energy

¨ Emotions

¨ Spirit

What Makes Me Sad?
If I love you more, am I to be loved less?

Potential heartbreak of investing deeply in others

The Law of Personal Dynamics (Luke 17:33):
“Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.”

Do Right Anyway

2 Corinthians 12:16-21

The legacy of Montrell Jackson

Are You Reviled?
I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by deceit.

Paul’s motives and actions attacked

How did this play out in Corinth?

America’s most reviled president

Are You Ready?
Did I take advantage of you?

In the sight of God  - “Coram Deo”

  • God has knowledge like no other
  • God judges strictly like no other
  • God has mercy like no other

Are You Realistic?
Paul had no guarantee of success

  • They might continue to hate him
  • They might not grow in Christ

What happened next?

1 Clement

Whatever may be discouraging you: Do right anyway!

Sermon outline for Sunday, July 10, 2016

Pastor Richard C Klueg

Blowing Your Own Horn

2 Corinthians 12:11-13

Brass instruments get your attention
To “blow your own horn” as a Christian, it must be …

1. Only when you must
I have been a fool! You forced me to it

a.To defend yourself

b.To lead

c.To speak for God

2. Only When it is legit
Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.

For I was not at all inferior to these super-apostles

The signs of an apostle were performed among you with utmost patience

3. Only if you have a servant’s heart
I myself did not burden you

The example of our Lord Jesus

a .Assertive

b .A servant
